Investments in northern infrastructure help build stronger, more inclusive communities and ensure northerners and their families have access to modern, reliable infrastructure that meets their unique needs. Communities across Nunavut will benefit from the construction of crucial infrastructure and the establishment of vital services thanks to a joint investment of more than $194 million from the federal and territorial governments.

Joint funding with territorial and local partners through various programs including the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program (GICB); the Rural Transit Solutions Fund (RTSF); the Green Infrastructure Stream (GIS) of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) will support eight significant projects across Nunavut.

  9. Inuit employment in the Government of Canada is central to building prosperity for Inuit in Nunavut and is a vital part of Canada’s responsibilities under the Nunavut Agreement and commitments to reconciliation.
  10. The Governments of Canada and Nunavut today announced a three-year plan to improve and expand early learning and child care (ELCC) services in the territory. This is part of the Canada-Nunavut ELCC Agreement for 2021-2026.

Today, the Minister of Transport, the Honourable Pablo Rodriguez, and the Minister of Public Services and Procurement, the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, announced that a contract has been awarded to Pilitak Enterprises Ltd., an Inuit company, to construct a new National Aerial Surveillance Program (NASP) aircraft hangar in Iqaluit, Nunavut.

Today, the Honourable Marci Ien, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, joined by the Honourable Margaret Nakashuk, Nunavut’s Minister responsible for the Status of Women, and the Honourable John Main, Nunavut’s Minister of Health, made a historic announcement of up to $17 million to help the victims and survivors of gender-based violence.

On September 29, the Honourable Marci Ien, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, along with the Honourable Margaret Nakashuk, Nunavut’s Minister responsible for the Status of Women, and the Honourable John Main, Nunavut’s Minister of Health, will make an announcement supporting the victims and survivors of gender-based violence in Nunavut.
  17. Today, the Honourable Dan Vandal, Minister of Northern Affairs, PrairiesCan and CanNor, announced an investment of $280,000 that will support strategic development, costs related to the annual Kivalliq Trade Show, and the expansion of the society’s entrepreneurship program over three years. Funding for this initiative is also being provided by the Government of Nunavut and the Kivalliq Inuit Association.

In Iqaluit, the city’s Franco-Centre has for decades operated a multi-use venue for francophones, Inuit and the general public to participate in a wide variety of cultural and local events that enrich life in the community.
  19. As this year’s wildfire season has shown us, Northern and Indigenous communities are already feeling the devastating effects of climate change, and it’s crucial that they have the tools they need to lead on adapting to the changing environment.
  20. Today, Vice President of Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTI), Paul Irngaut; Minister of Indigenous Services, Patty Hajdu; Nunavut Minister of Health, John Main; and Member of Parliament for Nunavut, Lori Idlout, turned tundra on the future site of Aqqusariaq as part of a ground-breaking (“tundra turning”) ceremony. Aqqusariaq is an $83.7 million treatment and recovery centre, with $42.1 million in funding from the Government of Canada and $41.6 million from the Government of Nunavut. In addition, NTI provided $5 million towards the overall costs of the project and $11.8 million through the Makigiaqta Inuit Training Corporation to train Inuit counsellors. Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) will also provide $9.7 million per year in annual funding towards the costs of operating the centre.

Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, February 24, 2023—Today, the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities, and the Honourable David Joanasie, Minister for Community and Government Services for the Government of Nunavut, announced joint funding of $1.9 million for the design phase of two new water treatment plants in Rankin Inlet and Grise Fiord.

Hamlet of Pond Inlet, Nunavut, February 15, 2023 — Today, the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities, and David Stockley, Chief Administrative Officer, Hamlet of Pond Inlet, announced more than $2 million in federal funding towards a new men’s shelter and a wellness centre for the community.

  34. Iqaluit, Nunavut, January 12, 2023 — Today, the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities, announced an investment of $50,000 to support an active transportation planning project in Iqaluit.
  35. Polar Knowledge Canada (POLAR) and the Canadian Museum of Nature have signed a Letter of Agreement to continue collaborating on research and monitoring in the North and Arctic to further understand rapidly changing northern ecosystems.

Today, as the world is gathered in Montreal at the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, the Honourable Dan Vandal, Minister of Northern Affairs, Minister responsible for PrairiesCan and CanNor, announced additional funding of $870,340 over three years for the next phase of this important project.

Iqaluit, Nunavut, November 16, 2022—Today, the Honourable Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions and Associate Minister of Health, and Gwen Healey Akearok, Executive and Scientific Director of the Qaujigiartiit Health Research Centre, announced more than $7.2 million in joint funding to support the construction of a new community wellness hub in Iqaluit.

Today, the Pitquhirnikkut Ilihautiniq / Kitikmeot Heritage Society, the Government of Canada and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities announced the launch of the Nunamiutuqaq - Building from the Land project which will build capacity, awareness, and ownership of clean energy in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, and explore the challenges of developing and supporting long-term, sustainable infrastructure across the Canadian Arctic.
